“Every company has a growth arc, and each takes its own unique path to success. For David Nolan’s company Sixpenny Architectural Fabrication, the development has involved changing the original owners’ concept and investing in the hardware and management tools to help it grow. After 10 years at the company, he’s starting to feel it’s where it is meant to be.”

“And once the idea was hatched, the final warm and cool hues decided upon, and the renderings completed, it was time to find a company that could manufacture the piece. Architectural fabricators Sixpenny, on Toronto’s Geary Avenue, had the necessary mettle. “The can really do anything” Mr. Sampson says. “And they just happened to be in our ‘hood… We knew that this was going to be a very collaborative process and we’d be seeing a lot of different mock-ups then working through the whole fabrication process.”

“In total, the piece encompasses 8,000 plastic discs — each cut by the team at Sixpenny Architectural Fabrication and threaded onto one of 650 steel wires that terminate in weighted tungsten fishing sinkers. To prepare for installation, these discs were then packed into individual bags labelled with Battleship-like coordinates. Once on-site, each cable was hung from its corresponding section of a metal grid structure painted white to blend in with the ceiling above.”

“'Tis the season of light displays and Christmas decoration. Not only can you look up and admire this eight-storey LED Christmas tree, but you can also walk right through it. Standing at an impressive 34 metres high, SmartCentres Real Estate is calling it Canada's tallest walk-through LED Christmas tree, that you can find north of Toronto, just outside of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station.”

“Rising eight stories above the city of Vaughn, spreading holiday joy and cheer from 100 New Park Place, the SmartCentres REIT Christmas Tree is a sight worth seeing. Sixpenny Architectural Fabrication chose EBS Geostructural Inc. to design and install Chance helical piles for the foundation. Working with Blackwell Structural Engineers, the foundation consisted of twelve Chance Foundation Solutions SS5 helical piles with bolted removable base connections. Our low-impact equipment made a graceful solution for this well-landscaped location.”
